As construction safety technology advances, the latest system for addressing falls on construction sites has emerged, the Cyber-Physical System (CPS).
CPS has been defined by the US National Science Foundation as “an engineered system consisting of a seamless integration of computational algorithms and physical components”.
Researchers are investigating the technology’s potential to improve safety on building sites, particularly concerning temporary structures that are commonly used on building sites and are so often the cause of injury.
Researchers are examining how CPS can improve the monitoring of temporary structures by connecting sensors installed in the real world to virtual 3D models.
Using a panoply of sensors installed on temporary structures, researchers collected and channelled information regarding their performance to a cloud database.
An alert is sent via a mobile device notification if any inconsistencies are detected that could result in an incident.
