There are fears of an epidemic following the first Gold Coast death from silicosis, the deadly lung disease caused by prolonged, unprotected inhalation of silica dust.
Prolonged exposure to silica dust associated with the engineered stone industry causes scarring of the lung tissue and there is currently no cure.
Gold Coast tradeworker Anthony White recently succumbed to the devastating illness after being diagnosed in November 2017.
The 36 year was the first in the industry in Queensland to pass away from the disease.
Workers who are concerned about their exposure to silica dust are urged to see their doctor and contact WorkCover on 1300 362 128 to arrange a health screen.
