In late March 2019 WorkSafe Victoria and SafeWork NSW embarked on a joint inspection focussing on keeping young workers safe and addressing fall hazards on work sites in the Albury Wodonga region.
Inspectors visited construction sites as part of the Cross Border Construction Program after identifying falls as the leading cause of serious injury and death for construction workers. In the past 2 years alone, 5 construction workers have died on the job as a result of falls.
Inspectors said the program helps construction employers identify similarities and differences between work health and safety regulations in each state.
It was also a chance for construction employers to review their own safety measures to ensure continued effectiveness in protecting construction workers.
Inspectors also reminded the industry that young workers are particularly vulnerable on construction sites for obvious reasons.
