Essential Energy is reminding workers that they are legally obliged to contact Dial Before You Dig to identify the location of underground networks before excavating.
It is vital that workers know the location of underground cabling such as electricity, gas, telecommunications and water prior to work to reduce the risk of death or serious injury to workers or the general public, Essential Energy warned.
Despite the fact that this a statutory requirement under the Electricity Supply Act, they say they still receive regular reports of incidents involving machinery that has damaged underground cables, costing thousands and risking lives.
Workers should remember that heavy financial penalties apply to workers found responsible for negligent behaviour when excavating.
