News of the Western Australian Government’s $310,000 in funding towards mental health awareness among construction and FIFO (Fly-in fly-out) workers has been welcomed.
The Mental Health Minister, Roger Cook said the funding would allow MATES In Construction WA to continue their work tackling mental health and suicide in construction and among FIFO workers.
MATES in Construction is a charity founded in 2008 to minimise the high level of suicide among construction workers.
Annually 190 construction workers die from suicide and construction workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than any other work related incidents.
The funds provided by the state government will be used to aid MATES in Construction in providing support and help to people and families affected by suicide in the construction industry including FIFO workers. It will also be used to educate construction workers on mental health and wellbeing by a standby response coordinator.
