WorkSafe Victoria has issued a safety alert about warning devices on powered mobile plant.
The guidance is for employers, self-employed people and those is control of the workplace about the unsafe practice of deactivating of warning devices on powered mobile plant.
The alert follows an incident earlier this year when an employee was hit and injured by a reversing excavator. The excavator had a motion alarm but it had been switched off via a switch in the cab.
An investigation revealed an industry practice of fitting powered mobile plant with a switch that turns the motion alarm off, in the aim of reducing the noise around residential areas.
The problem arises when the warning device does not work when the switch is turned off by mistake or the switch is not turned back on when it should be.
