Australia’s first code of practice addressing the mental health of Fly-in fly-out (FIFO) workers in the resources and construction sectors has been launched by Western Australia.
The ‘Mentally healthy workplaces for fly-in fly-out workers in the resources and construction sectors’ code is targeted at addressing hazards and risk factors in FIFO workplaces.
Research released in 2018 found that FIFO workers experience higher levels of psychological distress than non-FIFO workers.
The code encourages organisations to adopt a risk management process to identify potential psychosocial hazards. It also encourages the establishment of a positive and supportive workplace culture. Organisations are also encouraged to give suitable accommodation and rosters with enough time for rest and recreation.
