November 19-25 was Asbestos Awareness Week and provided an opportunity for the industry to focus on the risks associated with asbestos exposure.
This is a particularly important issue for the construction and renovation industries where the risks of coming into contact with asbestos from old building materials is high.
While asbestos has been banned from use in Australia, older buildings may still have asbestos containing materials and workers may be exposed when doing renovations or demolitions.
Minister for Industrial Relations Grace Grace said Asbestos Awareness Week was a chance to raise the alarm on the risks of asbestos.
