The collapse of an overloaded crane has resulted in the crane operator being fined $4400.
A worker was injured when the overloaded crane collapsed whilst working on a 4 storey commercial building in Karratha.
The crane was lifting concrete panels over the top of a building at the time of the incident.
The crane operator was aware that some of the lifts were beyond the specified maximum capacity of the crane, overloading the crane up to 135 per cent of its lifting capacity twice.
A continuous alarm was activated in the crane cabin and the operation of the crane was automatically stopped but the operator overrode the safety measures and continued to operate the crane overloaded.
The crane boom bent and collapsed. A worker’s foot was crushed in the incident resulting in the loss of 4 toes.
