An accident has taken place on one of Perth’s biggest construction sites, the Forrestfield Airport rail link tunnel.
A 35 year old construction worker is in hospital, fighting for his life after being injured inside the tunnel when a high pressure air pipe exploded and hit him in the face.
The incident happened 50 metres underground, which complicated the operation to get the man to safety.
A crane was used with a rescue cage to retrieve the man before he was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital.
Work on the site was postponed as the incident was investigated by both WorkSafe and Perth transport Authority.
The CFMEU says concerns about the safety of brackets connecting high pressure pipes was raised but calls for a safety review were ignored.
